  • Functionality with Moodle : the 2024 Integrations' Survey results are out!
    by Carles Aguiló.

    Dear moodlers,

Our 2024 Integrations' Survey results are out and we're happy to share them with you! 🥳 We heard from users all across the globe and all across Moodle functions, and we're already devising a plan to hear from even more of you next year. Thanks to everyone that participated or spread the word!

The main goal of our research is to understand which types of tools and functionality our users want to see better integrated with Moodle, and as it begins to be tradition, when asking about  integrations, we get great feedback about them, and also about Moodle in general, as you can see in the quotes section on slide 20 and forward.

As a sneak peak of its contents, I will share that the 2 most popular areas of interest continue to be:

    1. Content creation, and
    2. Video conference, or Virtual classroom for the savvy.

But Learning Analytics has taken 3rd place, the new Generative AI takes 4th place, and Plagiarism & Proctoring surges to the 6th.

Happy reading everyone! And happy break if you get one.

    Best,

           Carles🤓

  • Moodle Product Showcase Shorts: Get a sneak peek at Moodle LMS 4.4!
    by Marie Achour.

    Hello Moodlers,

Welcome to this edition of ‘Showcase Shorts’.

We’ve entered code freeze and our QA testing has now started, which can only mean one thing… A new release of Moodle LMS is coming soon! (on April 22nd, to be exact)

Here are a few sneak peeks at some of the new functionality you can expect to see:

Introducing our new look icons & sections

Taking into account valuable input from the community, we're polishing the default course appearance by introducing sections to Moodle LMS 4.4. We've fine-tuned the styling for better consistency and improved accessibility, making navigation smoother for all users.

As part of this refinement, we've given the Activity icons a lighter makeover to tone down their prominence on the page. Plus, we've adjusted the colour palette to ensure better accessibility for users with colour vision deficiency. Our palette underwent rigorous testing against the four most prevalent forms of colour vision deficiency to ensure an optimised experience for all users.

More options & a smoother user set-up experience for Multi-factor Authentication

Expect continuous improvements to the Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) tools introduced in our last update. In Moodle LMS 4.4, setting up security is even easier for users. Plus, users will now be able to get MFA codes sent via SMS, giving security-conscious folks even more options to choose from.

Bulk actions for user pages, a Moodle Workplace feature, is coming to Moodle LMS

Thanks to the hard work of the Moodle Workplace team, improvements are coming to the ‘Browse list of users’ page in Moodle LMS 4.4. The lists will be able to be filtered more easily, and functionality for bulk user actions is being introduced.

Out-of-the-box access to the ‘Ordering Question Type’ functionality in Quiz

A fan favourite, the Ordering question type plugin will be seamlessly integrated into Moodle core in 4.4. This means updated code for modern usability and improved accessibility. Plus, upgrading is a breeze with a seamless migration path in place. Big shoutout to the Moodle Users Association (MUA) for sponsoring this fantastic feature and to our community contributor, the legend Gordon Bateson, for creating it in the first place!

The Moodle LMS 4.4 release is not the only thing keeping us busy across Moodle Products!

We are also getting ready for the release of Moodle Workplace 4.4 (scheduled for a few weeks after the Moodle LMS release), which will include our new Course Catalogue functionality; you can see it in action in this video:

And, we are continuing to improve the user experience in our Mobile Applications; for a big round-up on a range of new features, check this video:

Last but not least, for our Moodle Community Developers, our journey to continuously improve your developer experience continues. Find out how by watching this:

That’s it for this edition of our ‘Showcase Shorts’; we hope you’ve enjoyed the updates.

    Until Next Sprint!

  • Functionality with Moodle : languages in an interconnected world
    by Carles Aguiló.

    Dear Moodlers,

I'm happy to be back with topic-specific updates, still at a monthly cadence, and to focus this month on languages.

    1. Teaching languages with Moodle

There is an excellent course at Moodle Academy presented by our long-time Moodler and even longer-time language teacher Mary Cooch that can also be found on our Youtube channel.

It not only presents all tools and strategies to teach languages on Moodle, but also suggests plenty of small tricks and ways in which to use those tools effectively, clearly displaying the command of real-life teaching and learning that Mary possesses.

    2. Poodll

Poodll is a set of tools that makes language teaching and language assessment a piece of cake. You can create little games like flashcards (with user completion tracking) and a 90's arcade game in a word learning fashion. You also have all the tools you need to grade the student's speech or video output automatically or manually, and easily provide them with feedback that can be automatically or custom generated, text, video or audio again, and that will add real formative assessment to their activities. Poodll is also a Moodle Certified Integration, so Moodle has performed an in-depth review of its code and user experience.

    3. Languages and educational technology shows

I have been lucky to attend three shows in these first weeks of 2024: Learning Technologies France in Paris, BETT show in London and FOSDEM in Brussels. Whereas I have been to BETT many times, it was my first time for Learning Technologies France and my first time at FOSDEM and both were extremely exciting, buzzing and essentially too successful, as booths were busy the whole time and talks often hung the sign "This room is full". And for both of them, you better speak a couple of languages too, as English will normally get you far, but there is nothing like communicating with people in their comfort zone, which is their mother tongue.

And that's it from me! Next month I'll be back with the results of the 2024 Integrations' Survey. Until then, have a beautiful time.

    Best,

          Carles

  • Getting Started
    by Scott Anderberg.

    Hi Moodle Community,

I’m off to a strong start in my 3rd full week as Moodle’s new CEO.  I’m back in London after two great weeks in Australia with our teams and partners there.  People keep asking me how I’m feeling.  The answer is full!  There are so many great things happening and so much great work to do.  The highlight of the last two weeks has been meeting people though, and I’m looking forward to continuing to do that!  We’ll be working hard on our forward looking plans over the coming months and as important information becomes available, I’ll be back in touch.  I will be doing a lot of traveling in the coming months to visit other members of our team and I’ll be looking for the opportunity to pop in at MoodleMoots along the way.  I will definitely be at our Global Moot in Mexico later this year and I hope to see many of you there!

    Scott

  • Moodle Products Roadmap Update - our first for 2024!
    by Marie Achour.

    Hi Moodlers,

The Moodle Products team recently completed our 3-monthly increment planning process during which we re-assessed our priorities and formalised our delivery plans for the quarter ahead, as well as reviewed our longer-term roadmap.

Our goals for the quarter are aligned with Moodle's Product Vision which is focused on empowering our users to unlock their creativity, facilitate collaboration and optimise their learning & business outcomes.

For Moodle LMS, this means that we will be aiming to:

    1. Complete the designs for our new AI Subsystem which will power Moodle’s AI capabilities in the future, with immediate focus on enabling AI-generated content creation and launching embedded tools to support learners.

    2. Build our new SMS Subsystem which will enable the enriching of the notifications functionality in Moodle, helping educators and their learners collaborate more effectively and stay informed of key events that impact their learning outcomes.

    3. Finalise the changes to our activity icons, with a new colour palette and some new designs that will make it easier for students to easily identify what they are working on.

    4. Deliver our new course subsection functionality, providing more flexibility on how courses can be structured in Moodle to make them easier to navigate and provide more options for how content can be presented.

    5. Complete the integration of the ‘Ordering Question Type’ plugin into Moodle core, as it is one of our most popular plugins it’s no surprise that this project was chosen by the Moodle User Association.

    6. And last but certainly not least, support the release of Moodle LMS 4.4 scheduled for the 22nd of April

For Moodle Workplace, this means we will be focused on:

    1. Delivering our new Course Catalogue feature, bringing self-directed learning capability to our solution for the first time!

    2. Passing our WACG AA accessibility accreditation, certifying Moodle Workplace as best in class against accessibility standards (also for the first time).

Our community developers should also expect to see further developments in support of our ongoing commitment to modernise our software:

    1. Updates to the Task API: we will be completing technical enhancements that will make it easier for administrators to manage their sites in the case of task failures and create the foundation for further technical modernisation in the future.

    2. Enhancements to the LTI framework: creating more opportunities to leverage the power of this common standard in Moodle.

    3. Changes to our Web services & Bootstrap: please watch the videos below for excellent summaries of the work we will be progressing in this space.

    4. Focus on Plugin reviews: each of our teams will dedicate time this quarter to review plugins submitted by our community, keep an eye out for feedback and a sharp drop in the queue!

To find out more about these upcoming improvements and to see what we have planned long term, please check out our Public Roadmap. From there, you can follow the links to the Tracker issues for even more details.

    Until next increment!

    The Moodle Products Team

We invite you to register for our next Moodle Academy webinar “Student partnership in assessment”, on Wednesday 7th February at 11:00-12:00 UTC, which is free to attend. At this webinar, we will welcome Rob Lowney, Senior Learning Technologist at Dublin City University.

Involving students as partners in the assessment process helps develop assessment literacy, support student engagement, and recognises students’ agency and their being experts in their own learning. Moreover, it helps support academic integrity and universal design for learning. Technology can play a key role in facilitating assessment partnership between educators and students. This webinar will share the experiences of Dublin City University (DCU) in utilising core and third-party Moodle tools to support assessment partnership, and encourage other educators to adopt these approaches into their own practice.

  • Join us for the Moodle Academy webinar “Improving Moodle through UX research and data analysis” on Thursday 25th January at 10:00 UTC
    by Sandra Matz.

We invite you to register for this free webinar “Improving Moodle through UX research and data analysis” on Thursday 25th January at 10:00-11:00 UTC. At this session, we will welcome Eliot Hoving and Stuart Lamour at UCL.

UCL Moodle is one of the biggest Moodle installations in Europe. It provides an essential arena for the teaching and learning of UCL’s 51,000 students and 16,000 staff. It is also an incredibly complex Moodle that combines third party cloud infrastructure, third party development, around 200 plugins, some local and some from the community, and internal Agile based development.

In order to upgrade from Moodle 3.11 to Moodle 4.2 in 2023, the central Moodle team engaged in a process of UX and data-led discovery and analysis to re-design its landing page, dashboard, and identify areas for future course format and plugin development. Many of the results were surprising and revealed the importance of continually engaging with end users when trying to evaluate and roadmap Moodle development.

In this webinar, our invited speakers will outline the methods of UX and data analysis used at UCL and the results. They will further show how these methods can be adapted at other institutions looking to improve their Moodle.

This webinar is part of the course ‘Moodle Academy webinars’. You have to be enrolled in the course to join the webinar.
